Organic Soil Stimulants

What is organic soil stimulant?

Healthy soils are teeming with life, from the giant work horses we know as earth worms to the microscopic single cell bacteria. This range in species is known as biodiversity. Health is measured in not just biodiversity but also in the quantity of organisms within each species. (Such as the number of earthworms per cubic foot of soil.) These organisms require a healthy home to maintain their numbers and overall diversity. Our urban soils lack the healthy home environment because of the limited supply of air, water, minerals, nutrients, and organic matter. Organic soil stimulants are water, air, minerals, nutrients, organic matter and in some cases living organisms.

Bio-Root Stimulants

As arborists we have the knowledge and tools to properly inject soil stimulants into a trees roots zone.  This in turn improves the health of the soil health around the point of injection and results in successful growth of roots.  So, indirectly, by adding soil stimulants we are stimulating root development.

Liquid soil stimulants are of the highest quality and behave similar to natural nutrient recycling. This product is applied using specialized soil injection equipment. A small amount of stimulant is pumped from a tank into the ground under the tree canopy. This is repeated, spacing the injection sites about three feet apart, to form a grid under the entire tree canopy. Pricing starts at $220 and goes up depending on the total rooting area injected. A typical tree is a single 14” Diameter trunk in the lawn area of a yard. The pricing is not linear but gets cheaper per tree as the number of treated trees increase.

Mycorrhizal Inoculations

Mycorrhizal Inoculations have a similar base as the bio-root stimulant described above but also include Mycorrhizal spores.  Mycorrhizae are beneficial fungal organisms that exist in symbioses with the root of trees. Trees require these beneficial relationships to thrive.  Healthy soils have naturally occurring spores but unhealthy soils have low concentrations.  By injecting specific varieties of spores that can withstand harsh soil environments we can improve the chances of root inoculation.  Mycorrhizae come in two main categories, endo and ecto.  Inoculants come in three combinations, only  endo-mycorrhizea, only ecto-mycorrhizea, and a combination of both endo and ecto.  Some tree species form relationships with only one type or the other and yet some tree species need both types.  Arborists know which products to use for your property.  Pricing starts at $250 and goes up depending on the total rooting area injected and the type of Mycorrhizal spore used. A typical tree is a single 14” Diameter trunk in the lawn area of a yard. The pricing is not linear but gets cheaper per tree as the number of treated trees increase.

Air Injection

The amount of air and airspace in the soil is one of the biggest factors of soil health and the most difficult to manage.  Studies have shown that we can impact the amount of airspace in the soil by using compressed air.  The tool used to do this is called a Supersonic Air Knife.  This tool is connected to a large trailered air compressor and towed to job sites.  Using the air knife an arborist can make vertical insertions into the soil using the same grid pattern described for soil stimulants.  The Air Knife is also used for root collar excavations.
